Thailand’s violent political turmoil worries its small landlocked neighbour Laos, which uses the kingdom as a gateway for travel and trade, the Lao prime minister said Thursday.
“Political instability in Thailand is of great concern for us, too, especially (because) we share national borders with Thailand,” Bouasone Bouphavanh said at a business conference in Tokyo.
“Because the Lao PDR uses ports in Thailand to export and import … we are directly impacted,” he said, using his country’s official name, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
Laos, a mostly rural nation of about six million located between China, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, is among Asia’s poorest countries but has expanded hydropower and mining to earn foreign revenue.
Thailand’s army on Wednesday cracked down and ended a six-week protest by anti-government protesters in Bangkok, triggering a wave of arson attacks in the capital and more clashes.
“All the related parties in the turmoil should come to an agreement quickly so that the political instability will be solved as quickly as possible,” the Lao premier said through a translator, speaking at a Tokyo conference.
“Political stability in Thailand contributes to the stability of ASEAN as a whole,” he said of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

Lao Airlines Cancels Vientiane-Savannakhet-Siem Reap Flights

VIENTIANE, May 17 (Bernama) — The Lao Airlines has announced recently to cancel some of its flights particularly the Vientiane-Savannakhet-Siem Reap (Cambodia) route, due to the decrease in the passenger number and, the ash issue in European countries and the political problem in a neighbouring country.
Sitthideth Douangsitthi, head of the Marketing Department of the Lao Airlines, disclosed that the company had to stop and cancel some flights in order to save the status of the company.
In order to maintain its service to Siem Reap in Cambodia, the Lao Airlines has started to operate its flight on the Vientiane-Bangkok-Siem Reap route, reported Laos news agency (KPL).
Sitthideth Douangsitthi added that the airlines would operate regular flights on two routes Vientiane-Luang Prabang and Vientiane-Champassak routes that are connected to destinations in neighbouring countries.
The National Tourism Administration of Laos has expected that more than two million of foreign tourists will come to Laos in 2010 while the number of tourist arrivals in Laos in 2009 reached 1.7 million.
Lao Airlines is the national carrier of Laos, operating flight services to ten domestic destinations and international services to Cambodia, China, Thailand and Vietnam. Its headquarters is Vientiane’s Wattay International Airport.

นายสิดทิเดด ดวงสิดทิ หัวหน้าฝ่ายการตลาดของการบินลาว กล่าวว่า จำเป็นจะต้องงดบินในบางเส้นทาง เพื่อลดต้นทุน โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งเส้นทางบินลงใต้ไปยังเมืองเสียมราฐ ซึ่งได้เริ่มให้บริการใหม่เป็นเวียงจันทน์-กรุงเทพฯ-เสียมราฐ แทน
แต่การบินลาวยังคงให้บริการเส้นทางอื่นๆ ตามปกติ คือ เวียงจันทน์-หลวงพระบาง เวียงจันทน์-สะหวันนะเขต ที่สามารถเดินทางต่อไปยังประเทศเพื่อนบ้านได้
ปีที่แล้วนักท่องเที่ยวต่างชาติเดินทางไปท่องเที่ยวลาวจำนวน 1.7 ล้านคน เป้าหมายของปีนี้คือ 2 ล้านคน แต่สายการบินลาวกล่าวว่า กรณีภูเขาไฟระเบิดในไอซ์แลนด์ กับความไม่สงบในประเทศเพื่อนบ้าน กำลังเป็นปัญหาสำคัญสำหรับการท่องเที่ยวปีนี้
ปัจจุบันสายการบินแห่งชาติของลาว เปิดบินเชื่อมประเทศเพื่อนล้านใกล้เคียงหลายปลายทาง รวมทั้งไทย จีน กัมพูชา และ เวียดนาม
ปัจจุบันสายการบินลาวให้บริการด้วยเครื่องบินแบบ เอทีอาร์-70 และ MA-60 ที่ผลิตในจีน และเมื่อต้นปีนี้ได้เซ็นสัญญาซื้อเครื่องบินไอพ่นจากจีนจำนวน 2 ลำ ซึ่งจะเป็นไอพ่นลำแรกของประเทศ มีกำหนดส่งมอบปีหน้า
ผู้บริหารของสายการบินแห่งชาติ กล่าวเมื่อปีที่แล้วว่า กำลังหาลู่ทางเปิดบินระยะไกลข้ามทวีป แต่จนถึงบัดนี้ก็ยังไม่มีความคืบหน้า เกี่ยวกับแผนการนี้
ลาวกำลังก่อสร้างสนามบินแห่งใหม่ที่เมืองหลวงพระบาง ซึ่งจะทำให้เครื่องบินโดยสารขนาดใหญ่ 400 ที่นั่ง สามารถขึ้นลงได้ และกำลังจะพัฒนายกระดับสนามบินในแขวงเซียงขวาง ดินแดนทุ่งไหหินให้เป็นสนามบินสากลอีกแห่งหนึ่งรองรับการท่องเที่ยว
การพัฒนายกระดับสนามบินเมืองปากเซ ในแขวงจำปาสัก ยังดำเนินต่อไป และเมื่อแล้วเสร็จในปลายปีนี้ เครื่องบินโบอิ้งกับแอร์บัส จะสามารถขึ้นลงได้เช่นกัน
