Lynne Cheney posed this question about the timing of Monica Lewinsky’s first-person essay in Vanity Fair: Were the Clintons behind this?

“I really wonder if this isn’t an effort on the Clintons’ part to get that story out of the way,” Cheney, wife of former Vice President Dick Cheney, said during a Tuesday night interview on Fox News. “Would Vanity Fair publish anything about Monica Lewinsky that Hillary Clinton didn’t want in Vanity Fair?”

In the news release promoting Lewinsky’s much-buzzed-about story, the former White House intern says the Clintons had nothing to do with her decision to speak out now about the sex scandal that led to Bill Clinton’s impeachment in 1998. Lewinsky wrote a book in 1999 about her affair with Clinton.

Lewinsky writes she has been so silent “that the buzz in some circles has been that the Clintons must have paid me off; why else would I have refrained from speaking out? I can assure you that nothing could be further from the truth.”

Cheney noted the timing of Lewinsky’s essay comes as Hillary Rodham Clinton is contemplating another presidential run, and she suggested the article is a “strategy or tactic” about “getting it out of the way so we can say one more time to say, ‘it is old news.’”

Cheney also brought up the fact that Sen. Rand Paul — who is eyeing a possible 2016 race for the GOP nomination — recently raised the issue of Bill Clinton’s “predatory behavior.” Paul talked about the former president in that context during a Jan. 26 interview on NBC’s Meet the Press.
